Quel incroyable match

Today in Osaka, Zack Sabre Jr became a two time winner of the New Japan Cup, defeating Tetsuya Naito in the final at Osaka Jo-Hall. However, Sabre Jr was not the original planned winner or the tournament.

Kota Ibushi was the original plan, but was forced to forfeit his first round match due to not being medically cleared in time. Plans were in place for Ibushi to defeat Naito in the final, setting Ibushi up as the challenger for Kazuchika Okada at the April "Hyper Battle" show in Sumo Hall. Naito, by virtue of knocking off Okada in the semifinals, would then also have a claim for a title match, and would face Okada (who would defeat Ibushi in April) in the Fukuoka Dome in May. This would explain the somewhat puzzling booking of doing a second Okada/Naito match in just over a months time, as the Naito victory in the New Japan Cup bout now sets up a potential big money match in the Fukuoka Dome after Okada defeats Sabre Jr in April.

Two options were seriously considered once Ibushi was off the table, Sabre Jr, and Great-O-Khan. Naito was not considered, as the Okada/Naito match is needed for the bigger show in May. This left Naito's side of the bracket completely unchanged. It was narrowed down to Sabre Jr and O-Khan, as both were coming out of the same section of the bracket as Ibushi which meant as few changes to the overall booking of the tournament possible, plus both are considered opponents Naito could absorb a credible loss to. Jado & Dick Togo pushed for O-Khan, as he was Ibushi's first round opponent, which meant O-Khan could simply replace Ibushi all the way through the end, plus O-Khan is on the verge of a mega push anyway (the initial plan was for Ibushi's win over O-Khan to kick off a year long feud between the two, as one of the final steps in O-Khan's main event elevation). Gedo and others felt uneasy about burning off O-Khan's first world title challenge here, before his carefully planned push was fully executed. Gedo feels O-Khan needs more high profile singles wins, which was also the reason, when he was the lone United Empire member available to work the Golden Series tour, that O-Khan was booked to beat veterans and third generation stars on some of the bigger shows as opposed to facing young lions every night or being given the tour off entirely. Ultimately, Gedo has final say, and decided now was not the time for O-Khan. Sabre Jr, having already been a top title challenger and someone who could both defeat Naito credibly and lose to Okada without damaging himself, ended up being the logical pick. Sabre Jr's flash submission of O-Khan was done in part to protect O-Khan.

My personal opinion is that a Zack Sabre Jr win over Okada, while unlikely, can not be ruled out entirely, as injuries have a way of causing ripple effects in booking plans. An Ibushi return could cause changes as well, if they feel an Ibushi return match can carry a Dome main event on its own without burning off a match against another top star.

The confusing finish of the Will Ospreay/SANADA match was a combination of miscommunication and cultural differences.

Ospreay's errant shooting star press injured SANADA's orbital bone. At first, SANADA did not realize the extent of the injury, but during the cover after the Hidden Blade (which Ospreay appeared to execute with extreme care, probably realizing SANADA was shaken up by the shooting star), SANADA told Ospreay that his face was injured. Ospreay then called a "hammer elbow spot" emergency finish. This is where the confusion comes in.

Ospreay, thinking like a western wrestler, wanted to take it home and was expecting SANADA to submit to the elbow strikes so they could end the match as quickly as possible. SANADA, thinking like a Japanese wrestler and wanting to finish the planned match, didn't submit when Red Shoes Unno leaned in to ask, thinking Ospreay was calling a safe spot as opposed to Ospreay calling a finish, because tipping off Ospreay to the face injury was in SANADA's mind just tipping off Ospreay to take care of him. Ospreay kept hammering away waiting for the bell. Red Shoes was confused because Ospreay wouldn't stop the elbows and wouldn't allow himself to be pulled away so he could check on SANADA to see if something was legitimately wrong. Eventually Red Shoes, at his own discretion, decided that if he was confused than the audience must be confused as well, and made the call to end the match.

SANADA's misunderstanding of what Ospreay was trying to do was explained to us by a locker room source that unless it's something like a neck injury or blatant knockout, you are just expected to finish the match. The source cited similar orbital bone injuries to Mike Elgin and Tetsuya Naito as examples. A few years ago, KENTA was knocked loopy, but not knocked out, and (barely) finished a match vs Tomohiro Ishii. There doesn't appear to be any heat on Ospreay, who was doing what he thought was safe and best for an injured opponent. At no point was SANADA unconscious. The collapse before the second Hidden Blade attempt was a sell to set up the hammer elbows. One member of the office called it an "embarrassing display". As is usually the case in these scenarios, the call was made to lean into the finish moving forward.

The internal power struggle regarding STRONGHEARTS continues, but it appears those in favor have won, as the New Japan Cup tour was considered a trial run for the group, and everyone who matters most came away impressed. As we initially reported about a year ago, New Japan has been gently feeling out the relationship, but there is massive heat between Shingo and CIMA. But even those wary of CIMA and the burgeoning GLEAT relationship have generally been open to El Lindaman being given a chance as a junior, with Jushin Thunder Liger being the biggest proponent of the group as a whole and Dick Togo's relationship with Kaz Hayashi being the driving forces.
