Timberwolves Re-Assign Bracey Wright to D-League
January 31, 2006
Minnesota Timberwolves Vice President of Basketball Operations Kevin McHale today announced the team has re-assigned guard Bracey Wright to the Florida Flame of the NBA Development League (D-League). The Flame has been assigned the Timberwolves´ D-League affiliate for the 2005-06 campaign. Wright was recalled by the Wolves on Jan. 10.
Wright, a 6-3, 210-pound guard, made his NBA debut on Jan. 24 against Detroit, scoring five points. In two appearances with the Wolves since being recalled, Wright is averaging 3.0 points and 4.0 minutes per game. He has averaged 21.1 points (.460 FG%, 34-for-76) with 3.9 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game in 16 starts for the Flame. The rookie from Indiana University netted a season-high 33 points on Dec. 2 at Roanoke, one of 10 games with 20-plus points.
Wright, who was originally assigned to Florida by the Timberwolves on Nov. 4, was selected by the Timberwolves 47th overall in the 2005 NBA Draft, and signed on Sept. 12. The Colony, Texas native spent three seasons at Indiana University (2002-03 - 2004-05) where he led the Big Ten in scoring last season with 18.3 points per game and averaged 17.6 points (.405 FG%), 5.1 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game in 85 career contests for the Hoosiers.

Timberwolves owner reaffirms faith in McHaleAssociated Press
MINNEAPOLIS -- Criticism of Minnesota Timberwolves vice president Kevin McHale has been building, at least locally, in recent months.
But team owner Glen Taylor said Friday that McHale is still his man.
"I hear what people are saying," Taylor said, "but I don´t let that bother me."
Many fans were surprised by last week´s multiplayer trade with Boston that brought guard Ricky Davis to Minnesota and sent swingman Wally Szczerbiak to the Celtics.
The popular Szczerbiak is having a career season, the players received beyond Davis weren´t big names and the Wolves also gave up a first-round draft pick in the deal -- which has been in short supply in Minnesota for several years. (This one is lottery-protected.)
But Taylor, who stressed a wait-and-see analysis of the latest move, did not question the job McHale has done for him as the chief decision-maker on all personnel matters over the past decade.
"I think most fans overreact when we do well and overreact when we do poor," Taylor told The Associated Press in a phone interview. "I just have to look at the long run. In the long run, we´ve done some really nice things. Overall our team, since I bought it 10 years ago, we´ve been a really good team.
"That´s how we really calculate the results that Kevin has done, from where we started to where we are now. I don´t just take it one day. I like what Kevin has done."
Signing Joe Smith to an illegal long-term contract ultimately cost the Wolves three first-rounders, and many of the picks McHale has supervised -- excluding Kevin Garnett and Szczerbiak -- have not panned out. There have also been questionably expensive contracts.
But, as Taylor noted, Minnesota was a mess when McHale was promoted to vice president of basketball operations in 1995.
"I don´t think anybody´s as good as they think they are," Taylor said, "and I also think they are not as bad as some people think they are. I back up Kevin, and I ask him to take risks. I ask him to do things that aren´t exactly popular."
McHale has occasionally hinted that this isn´t a long-term gig for him, and he normally re-evaluates his interest each summer. But Taylor said he has not had any discussion with McHale about whether he´ll continue beyond this season.
"I can tell you this -- that he´s really immersed into the team right now," Taylor said. "He, like I, would like to see this trade work out."
The Wolves were one of the teams pursuing volatile forward Ron Artest, who eventually landed with the Sacramento Kings. Taylor expressed some interest, but he acknowledged that a bad experience with his last acquisition of a player with a questionable past might have dissuaded him from approving a potential deal.
Latrell Sprewell had a solid 2003-04 season after arriving in a trade and helped lead Minnesota to the Western Conference finals, but he carped about his contract at the beginning of the next season -- souring the experience for everyone.
"As the owner, you have to look at some things other than winning at all costs," Taylor said, "because you´re looking at the long run. Player characteristics are important to an owner."
The Wolves played the Trail Blazers Friday night in Portland.
Jaric says he was unfairly demotedGuard claims lack of playing time sealed his fateBY RICK ALONZOPioneer PressTimberwolves point guard Marko Jaric´s frustration bubbled over, the former starter saying coach Dwane Casey hamstrung him with a lack of playing time that helped lead to his demotion.
"I feel like when he wanted somebody else to give the role to, he made me kind of give up the role …" Jaric said before Friday night´s 94-80 loss to Utah at Target Center.
Jaric´s comments came after he was informed of Casey´s assertion that the veteran was given a fair chance to maintain the starting job.
Jaric didn´t play in either of the previous two games after being demoted following a 109-77 loss last Saturday at Golden State. He started the first 46 games of the season but was averaging just 20.5 minutes a game in the first eight games since a multi-player trade with Boston on Jan. 26, not including Friday´s meeting with the Jazz.
Jaric played seven minutes Friday night and did not score.
"When he wanted to give me a chance to play the point guard, I played the point guard position," Jaric said. "As soon as he thought that I´m not supposed to be the point guard for the team, he wanted to kind of prove to himself that I´m not supposed to play. I went from playing 30 minutes a game to 10 minutes a game. I couldn´t even do anything in those 10 minutes a game."
Jaric was the team´s marquee addition last summer, acquired in a sign-and-trade deal with the Los Angeles Clippers in exchange for Sam Cassell and a protected first-round pick. Jaric signed a six-year, $38 million deal.
Casey said before the game that he believes he gave Jaric the opportunity to succeed.
"Marko had 40-something games to get it done, and we were below .500," Casey said. "I feel very good that I gave Marko more than a fair chance with the starting position."
On Jan. 26, Minnesota traded Wally Szczerbiak to Boston as part of a seven-player deal. Marcus Banks came to the Wolves and has entrenched himself as the backup point guard, though he averaged 29.5 minutes in his first six games with Minnesota, essentially making him the primary option.
Jaric´s name has surfaced as the subject of trade rumors.
"I don´t care about that," he said. "I have respect for the team that acquired me, Minnesota. I play for this team here. As long as they want me, I´m going to be a part of this team and try to help this team win."
This has been a disappointing season for Jaric, who hasn´t lived up to the increased expectations that go along with the contract he signed. He was averaging 9.5 points and 4.8 assists a game while shooting 41.7 percent heading into Friday´s game.
Casey has a plan to get the 6-foot-7 Jaric minutes by playing him at shooting guard. One of Jaric´s weaknesses is guarding shorter, faster point guards.
Matchups aside, Casey has said he wants to see more energy, passion and leadership from Jaric. The coach and player met Thursday and discussed Jaric´s role.
"I´ve explained to him to get in there and push the ball and defend and do what he´s supposed to do when he´s starting," Casey said. "… The key is getting that opportunity, because Marcus is playing so well right now."
Playing shooting guard isn´t Jaric´s preference. He played several positions with the Clippers but always considered himself a point guard, first and foremost.
"I just hope whatever (Casey) does is going to help the team," Jaric said. "That´s why we´re all here, right?"
In two weeks, Jaric went from starting point guard, albeit one who was struggling, to a player who barely gets off the bench.
Said Jaric: "I am very frustrated. It´s hard to hide because I am very frustrated."
