American is roughly the same as english. There's just a few words that change.

Bob when I started to learn english by myself, I kept it simple : just watch american or english shows, such as Ellen or Conan (the redhead not the barbarian), it will help you to get used to the pronunciation of english. That how I start, few years ago.
