"Graphics:If you were looking forward to drastic graphical improvements from the original, you may be a little disappointed. Overall, BioShock 2 looks very similar to its predecessor sporting textures of a similar resolution, slightly reworked character models, and that neat droplet effect you see when you get splashed with water. The PlayStation 3 seemed to have some problems displaying the water, though. Water, environmental reflections, and the textures underneath (or behind) were displayed at a lower resolution than on the Xbox 360. Additionally, ripple animations seemed much choppier than on the Xbox 360. Normally a puddle here or there might not be such a big deal, but waterfalls, droplets, and streams are in abundance in Rapture, and they add up quickly. Similarly, the PlayStation 3 had issues displaying candle flames and some other random objects. At some angles, flames looked like a pixely, blocky mess at the tops of candlesticks. This issue seemed to be linked to the way the PlayStation 3 renders objects at a distance and may be due to the Depth of Field effect (or shallow focus). The issue was much less drastic when the camera was zoomed in closely.
Loading: The PlayStation 3 had a mandatory 4428 megabyte install and took a whopping 9 minutes, 45 seconds to install. This didn’t seem to help it, as the Xbox 360 still loaded an average of 14 seconds faster during the course of our samples. These samples do not include the time needed for the systems to perform automatic saves, which usually happens right after a load screen.
Conclusion: The winner of this Head2Head goes to the Xbox 360. Although there was some frame tearing on the Xbox 360 during a few clips, the PlayStation 3’s slow load times and sub-par rendering of water effects and reflections were too important to be ignored. Either way, you won’t be disappointed. 2K Games is the right decision for an awesome sequel. BioShock 2 has the familiarity of the original BioShock, and plenty of excitement to keep you coming back for more.
If you are planning to take another trip to Rapture, our recommendation is the Xbox 360 version with better visuals and faster load times."
